In California there are limitations set with vehicles regarding their emissions. When a vehicle and its owner undergo a smog check, the technician will attach a device to the tailpipe of the vehicle and run the engine simultaneously. This test helps to determine what the emissions output is of the vehicle when it is idle or being revved and then the smog technician will generally compare the results of the test to the standard for the specific type of vehicle.
